Nova Scotia SIRT investigate after suspect's collarbone injured in arrest

Woman killed in highway crash south of Fort McMurray

Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team is investigating the RCMP after a 32-year-old man was hurt while being arrested early Friday morning.

Around 6:20 a.m., Pictou County District RCMP responded to a call to find a 22-year-old man from Pictou Landing, N.S., stabbed.

Officers sent him to hospital in New Glasgow, N.S., with injuries that are not life-threatening, according to a statement issued Friday night.

Police then arrested the 32-year-old suspect, who is also from the community.

But during the arrest, "a struggle ensued," spokesman Cpl. Andrew Joyce said in the statement.

The man's collarbone was hurt, he said.

The man was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fractured collarbone, said SIRT. The man was treated and released back to police custody.

It's now up to SIRT to determine if police handled the situation appropriately.

Anyone who may have witnessed the arrest is asked to contact SIRT at 1-855-450-2010.
