Nunavut judge rejects lawyers' bid to pursue complaint about JP

A Nunavut court judge has rejected a call from two Nunavut lawyers for a review of disciplinary measures taken against a justice of the peace based in Cambridge Bay.

Tamara Fairchild filed a complaint against Gordon Bligh in 2012. Clare Henderson filed two complaints against him in 2013. The nature of the complaints have not been made public.

The lawyers wanted Bligh removed as a justice of the peace.

Instead, the Justice of the Peace Review Council — comprised of two judges, a JP and two members of the public — reprimanded Bligh for unethical conduct. The council also recommended he take a training program on judicial ethics.

Fairchild and Henderson had asked for a judicial review of that decision, arguing that the Justice of the Peace Review Council didn't give a reason for why it rejected their call for Bligh's removal as a JP.

In a written decision, released today, Justice Vital Ouellette rejected that argument.

Fairchild and Henderson's lawyer says they will appeal today's decision.
