Update: One killed, one critically injured in Modesto house fire. Woman killed identified

One person was killed in a residential fire on Carl Way in Modesto on Tuesday night, according to the Modesto Fire Department. The neighborhood is northeast of Oakdale Road and Sylvan Avenue.

The woman was identified as 77-year-old Nancy Holidy by the Stanislaus County Coroner’s Office.

Firefighters were dispatched at 11:43 p.m. and were told by a man that Holidy still was inside the home. When firefighters went inside, they found her on the second floor.

Both were transported to a local hospital. The man suffered burns and smoke inhalation and was reported to be in critical condition. Holidy was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to a Fire Department release.

Damage was limited to the second floor of the home. The Stanislaus Regional Fire Investigation Unit reported there was “at least one working smoke detector” in the home when the fire happened. They had not determined a cause as of Wednesday afternoon.
