One person, at least one dog injured in south Wichita house fire, official says

One person and at least one dog were injured during a house fire Thursday morning in south Wichita, the Wichita Fire Department said.

The person was injured from smoke inhalation but did not want to go the hospital, officials said. Two dogs were found in the home and one was put on oxygen, the fire department said in a news release.

“Both of these canines are alive and well, and have been reunited with the occupant,” the release says.

The fire was reported at 8:39 a.m. in the 400 block of West 57th Street South, which is between Seneca and U.S. 81. Arriving firefighters saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the mobile home.

“The home had just been placed in its current location and the occupants had just moved (into) the residence,” the release says. “Smoke detectors had been removed during the relocation process and were not present in the home.”

An occupant was able to evacuate before firefighters arrived, the release said. It’s unclear if that’s the person who was critically injured. The dogs were found during a search of the home. A picture the fire department put on Facebook shows a small dog hooked up to oxygen.

Firefighters were able to put out the flames. The cause of the fire is under investigation. American Red Cross is helping the two people and their pets who live at the home.
