There’s one simple solution to let Texas and AG Ken Paxton just get it all over with | Opinion

Impeachment is too complex

It would be nice if Texas would change how impeachments are handled. Do away with the elected jurors. Politics will not be far away. To save time and money, just require Attorney General Ken Paxton to resign without admitting guilt.

We all saw Jan. 6 as it unfolded

I will never forget watching with horror and disbelief Donald Trump’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021. There was no question in my mind it was an attempted coup led and directed by a deranged megalomaniac who somehow had become our president. The gaslighting by Republican officeholders pretending that what happened was normal has been excruciating.

The indictment of Trump, based entirely on information supplied by GOP loyalists, should be the political cover needed for rational Republicans cowed into submission to finally denounce him. Will they?

An attack on free speech for Trump

Where is our protection of free speech under the Constitution? It is up to the voters to believe or not believe what Donald Trump says, not a Justice Department run by Trump haters and targeting the opponent in the upcoming presidential election.

Whether you like Trump or not, the average American is under attack for free speech. We cannot let this happen. We must stand up for our constitutional rights.

Could have gone further on Trump

Nicole Russell’s Aug. 2 column is an understatement of the harm Donald Trump has done to this country. (17A, “New poll shows how Trump keeps conning GOP voters”) People now want to fight the government, minorities, immigrants — the list goes on. Rather than see what positive progress has been made, they want to hate.

If there are deficiencies in the government, then work to correct them. People are doing so every day. I don’t want to see the whole teapot overturned because Republicans and others want to drink Kool-Aid.

Explains the complicated clearly

Kudos to Nicole Russell for her column on who is doing the better job on the border, Texas or the Biden administration. (July 27, 11A, “Texas is doing the job on border, and all Biden does is sue over it”) This column is just one example of Russell’s talent for explaining complicated national or international issues in a concise yet fully understandable way.

This kind of writing talent in the Star-Telegram’s opinion section is what has kept me a subscriber these past several years.

Legal decisions not a political matter

Ryan Rusak’s Aug. 3 column “GOP voters must decide if 2024 is all about Trump” (11A) states that the indictment of Donald Trump isn’t quite convincing of a criminal conspiracy. A multifaceted plan to overturn a presidential election and an attack on the seat of our democracy doesn’t qualify? I’d like to know what you would call it.

President Joe Biden is not bringing these charges; it’s a Department of Justice special prosecutor. Let the law run its course. Voters and politics should not decide how the law should be applied.

Aldean is all right in my book

Mark Davis’ commentary on Jason Aldean was perfect. (July 30, 5A, “Who brought race into Aldean controversy? It wasn’t the singer”) So many other artists can speak and sing about violence and racism, and it’s all right. But let a country star take a stance, and he is completely bashed.

“Try That in a Small Town” is a great song. So many other artists have backed Aldean, and I will, too.
