Oscar Tshiebwe named NBA G League’s rookie of the year after record-breaking season

Former University of Kentucky basketball star Oscar Tshiebwe was named the NBA G League’s rookie of the year on Tuesday.

The award is voted on by the league’s head coaches and general managers. L.A. Clippers two-way guard Jordan Miller (Ontario Clippers) and Philadelphia 76ers two-way guard Ricky Council IV (Delaware Blue Coats) finished second and third in voting, respectively.

Tshiebwe, a two-way player for the NBA’s Indiana Pacers and G League’s Indiana Mad Ants, led the developmental league in rebounding this season with 16.2 per game, a league record for a single season. He also averaged 16.2 points and 1.8 assists for the Mad Ants.

Tshiebwe opened his rookie season with 33 points and 22 rebounds on Nov. 11 against Sioux Falls, the first of his 27 double-doubles.

Tshiebwe also set single-season Mad Ants franchise records for total rebounds (530), offensive rebounds (200) and defensive rebounds (330). He broke the Mad Ants’ single-game rebounding record with 28 and single-game defensive rebounding mark with 20 against Motor City on Nov. 22.

Tshiebwe posted 10 games of 18 or more rebounds and eight games with 20 or more, both franchise records.

Tshiebwe has also played in eight NBA games with the Pacers and has averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in 5.3 minutes.

He was part of the NBA’s Rising Stars game in Indianapolis. during All-Star weekend.
