Outdoor vintage sale pops up near Atwater Market
A new outdoor market happening at Place du Marché Saturday afternoon will mean a chance for thrifters and bargain hunters to uncover a taste of the city's vintage shopping scene, and maybe find a few treasures in the process.
The event, happening from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., will also feature local artisans selling handmade goods.
Valérie Lalonde runs Marché Underground, an indoor vintage market located in St. Henri, and helped organize the outdoor event as a way to showcase what the local vendors have to offer.
As guest host on CBC's All in a Weekend, Shari Okeke stopped by Marché Underground, to find out more about the event. She also got a peek at some of the vintage treasures that could be on display Saturday.
Here are some of the items that caught her eye.
The Montreal-Italy suitcase
The inside of this suitcase looks like new and still has address labels from the original owner — a Montreal address and an address in Italy.
She thinks it's between 60 and 65 years old.
'You know this suitcase has a history, the places it went. For me things like this...they have a soul.'
Pyrex flashback
What a flashback to my childhood. These green mixing bowls look exactly like the ones my mom had in her kitchen when I was stirring up pudding!
A set like this would sell for around $70, says Lalonde.
Cabbage Patch craze
Remember Cabbage Patch dolls? Marché Underground has Cabbage Patch doll phones, Ronald McDonald phones and all sorts of toys from the 1970s and 1980s.
"It's often the toys I wished I had when I was a kid," said Lalonde.
Industrial sewing table
Lalonde says this is an original industrial sewing machine table. It's a look you'll also find in many high-end furniture stores today, she said.
RCA turntable
This RCA stereo is one of Lalonde's favourite items at Marché Underground.
Lalonde says she loves this RCA turntable because it was designed by a Montrealer. She says the pink plexiglass cover is so bright, it looks as though there is a light inside.
Although Marché Underground has radios that still work, this stereo does need to be repaired. Lalonde says sometimes vintage vendors look for potential, hoping to fix things up and resell them.
"Sometimes we purchase the items for the potential but as you can see the design is out of the world," Lalonde said.
Place du Marché is located at the corner of St-Ambroise Street and Atwater Avenue.
