P.E.I. lobster fishermen say prices higher in other provinces

P.E.I. lobster fishermen say they want to know why they aren't getting as much money for their lobster as fishermen in some other provinces.

Craig Avery, the president of the P.E.I. Fishermen's Association, says the prices are better than last year, but they should be higher.

"Well the price all over P.E.I. here right now is $4.25 for the canner lobsters and $4.75 for the market-sized lobster," said Avery.

"We don't understand why there is a lower price here on P.E.I. compared to our counterparts in the Magdalen Islands, Quebec, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia."

Nova Scotia fishermen are getting an even $5 a pound for canners and $5.50 for market lobster, according to the Fishermen's Association. New Brunswick fishermen in the Bay of Fundy are pulling in $6.25 for their market-sized lobster.

Avery concedes that Island canner-sized lobster are smaller than those in other provinces but he says there is more demand for the smaller-sized P.E.I. lobster, particularly in the Asian market, and so there should be no difference in price.

Avery also says lobster prices should be steady across the region, like they are for snow crab.
