Pair extracted from precarious 50-foot ravine in Nelson, B.C.

A couple was rescued by rope from a 50-foot ravine in Cottonwood Park in Nelson, B.C., Friday night.

Around 8 p.m. PT, Nelson Fire Rescue responded after hearing reports of a fall into a ravine above Cottonwood Falls, in a park along Cottonwood Creek just inside the city.

Rescuers found two injured people in the creek about 50 feet below the road. They focussed first on the female, who appeared to have more serious injuries.

Rescuers rappelled down the steep rock face to get to the pair. They removed one person at a time, first using a spinal board and basket stretcher to lift the woman out with a ladder truck.

She remains in Kootenay Lake Hospital with serious injuries.

The man was lifted out using a harness. His injures were minor, said rescuers.

"As challenging as the location was... rescue crews were fortunate that the water levels were low," said Assistant Fire Chief Michael Daloise in a press release.
