Pair of serious crashes raise safety concerns in Norfolk

Two crashes in two days on Norfolk County roads have local police urging drivers to keep their eyes on the road — and each other.

“This week, Norfolk OPP has investigated two serious motorcycle collisions. Thankfully, neither was fatal,” Const. Andrew Gamble said in a post to social media on Wednesday.

“Whether you’re driving a truck or riding a motorcycle, both need to stay aware of each other on the road.”

On Tuesday afternoon, a pickup truck and a motorcycle collided on Cockshutt Road just north of Concession 6 Woodhouse. The biker was airlifted to hospital with what police called “serious, life-altering injuries.”

The next day saw another collision involving a pickup and a motorcycle, this time at the intersection of Highway 6 and St. John’s Road East, just north of Port Dover.

The biker involved in that crash was hospitalized with serious injuries.

St. John’s Road — which also crosses Cockshutt Road and Blueline Road — has been a subject of discussion at Norfolk council in recent years due to a high number of crashes and persistent speeding through those intersections, which do not have traffic lights.

No further information on the condition of the victims, or whether charges are pending in either crash, was available as of Thursday afternoon.

“Always look twice when proceeding through an intersection or making turns. By doing so, you could save a life,” Gamble said.

“Remember, traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility.”
