How the papers covered Brexit day

Prime Minister Theresa May has signed the letter triggering Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty, officially launching the process for Britain to leave the European Union.

The letter will arrive in the hands of European Council President Donald Tusk at lunchtime today, hand-delivered by Sit Tim Barrow, the British ambassador to the EU.

The signing of the letter kicks off two years of negotiations between Britain and the European Union, after which time Britain will be forced to leave with or without a deal.

Speaking to the Commons, the PM called this ‘the moment for the country to come together’.

She will pledge to ‘represent every person’ as she attempts to strike a deal for country that is ‘one great union of people and nations with a bright future.’

Mr Tusk is expected to speak at a press conference later after the letter has been delivered.
