Parents Speak After Daycare Worker Allegedly 'Beat' Infant to Death: ‘Monsters Come in All Shapes and Sizes’

The parents of a 5-month-old baby who died while in his daycare are reeling from the alleged abuse he suffered and urging other parents to “ask all the questions” if they feel their baby is being treated without proper care.

Brayden Paul Robertson died at just 5 months old on March 25 after he was dropped off at his daycare in Demopolis, Ala., according to WSFA.

On that day, his mother Taylor says she was notified that her son was “unresponsive” at the daycare and had a co-worker drive her there in three minutes, per the outlet.

”I saw his lifeless body on the changing table as they were trying to do life-saving measures,” she said.

On the same day, Demopolis Police arrested Versa Mae Simmons, a 68-year-old employee at the Tender Years daycare and charged her with murder in connection with the death of the infant, police said at the time, per WSFA and The Demopolis Times.

On April 5, authorities said they added four additional counts of aggravated child abuse to her charges, per The Demopolis Times and WSFA. A judge set her bond at $1 million, according to Wiregrass Daily News.

Now, the child’s parents are urging others to be careful and notice warning signs.

”Monsters come in all shapes and sizes and people you never would think, so don’t be fooled,” Brayden’s mother Taylor told WSFA.

She also claimed that in hindsight, there were several prior instances that were red flags.

Brayden would often come home from the daycare with scratches, which the caretakers explained away as scratches from his own nails or the clip of his pacifier, she explained, per WSFA.

“Ask all the questions. If you think it wasn’t his fingernails? Ask,” Taylor said. “Ask for video footage. Ask. I wish I could go back and change a lot, but I can’t.”

She also said there were instances when the child would light up when she saw her at the end of the day.

“[Of] course you just think that’s your baby excited to see you,” she recalled, according to WSFA. “But now as a mother, it makes me wonder, are you so excited because I’m finally taking you away from something that you don’t like.”

“He didn’t have a voice. He couldn’t tell me ‘Momma, I don’t want to go here,’ ” she said.

Simmons is accused of “willfully abusing, cruelly beating or otherwise willfully maltreating” the child and causing his death, according to unspecified court records cited by WSFA.

It isn't immediately clear if Simmons has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on her behalf.
