Paul Reynolds Centre pool to reopen Friday after latest closure

The pool at Paul Reynolds Community Centre — which has been closed since May 10 — will reopen Friday morning.

Last week, St. John's city councillor Jamie Korab told CBC News that consultants from outside the province were working on the mechanical problem related to the air handling unit that forced the pool shutdown.

At that time, Korab said, "They're still trying to iron out what the exact issue is, what the fix is."

Last Wednesday afternoon, the City of St. John's said in a statement the pool would reopen at 6:30 a.m. on May 24 and apologized for the inconvenience the closure caused.

It's unclear if the work will be covered by warranty.

The swimming pool was shut down from Nov. 14 until Dec. 9 last year because a sound panel came loose. An inspection at the time found that all 50 of the panels had to be removed.

When asked about the latest problem, Korab had replied that these kinds of incidents with a multi-million dollar project are "not uncommon."

The pool opened less than two years ago.
