A 54-year-old man was struck and killed by an allegedly impaired driver in North York early Monday, police say.

The collision happened around 5 a.m. in the area of Lawrence Avenue and Varna Drive, just east of Allen Road.

The man was taken to hospital, where he died. Police have not publicly identified him.

According to Staff Sgt. Paul Lentsch, who works in Toronto police's traffic services, a 19-year-old man was arrested and charged with impaired driving causing death.

Investigators are looking into whether street racing may have been a factor in the collision, Lentsch said.

Police closed Lawrence Avenue in both directions from Shermount to Glenmount avenues for their investigation.
