Pokemon Go a no-no behind the wheel: Halifax police ticket driver

A driver caught playing Pokemon Go while behind the wheel has been ticketed, a first for Halifax Regional Police.

Police got a call about a driver swerving on the road in the city's south end, near Roxton Road, around 9 p.m. July 21.

Turns out, he was on a hunt for Pokemon.

He was given a ticket for using a cellphone while driving.

The police issued some safety tips Wednesday for people playing Pokemon Go.

"Don't let Pikachu and friends lead you to the police," read a media release.

'We like people to pay attention'

Const. Kristine Fraser said this is the first case where someone in Halifax was charged for driving while playing the app.

She said Pokemon Go hasn't been a safety problem for police, but they want to ensure people are aware of their surroundings while playing the app.

"Don't drive, ride your bike, skateboard, any mode of transportation while you're interacting with the app. We like people to pay attention when they are playing," said Fraser.

"This Pokemon app may take you to unfamiliar areas and if you are going to an unfamiliar area, just let somebody know where you're going. And also have fun."
