Police ID remains found near butcher shop, suspect charged

Man charged with murder after woman's remains found behind butcher shop in April

Police have identified the human remains found last week behind an east-end butcher shop, and laid charges against a Toronto man.

The remains are those of 30-year-old Melissa Cooper of Toronto, investigators at 55 Division said Saturday.

Police said they have arrested 38-year-old Albert Ian Ohab, also of Toronto, and charged him with committing an indignity to a dead body.

Cooper's remains were found behind Charlie's Meat and Seafood, in the Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East area, during a routine check of the premises on April 19.

Police said at the time the discovery was suspicious, but it was not immediately deemed a homicide.

Investigators have not said how Cooper died. Ohab appeared in court on Saturday morning.
