Police investigate jewelry heist in west Edmonton

Half a million dollars worth of jewellery, including gold chains, pendants, Canadian diamonds and expensive watches were snatched from Paris Jewellers, a west end jewellery shop earlier this month.

Det. Rae Gerrard said the thieves broke into a vacant business sometime between 3:30 a.m and 6 p.m. on April 14, cutting a hole through the wall to get to the Subway, located next door. After that, the perpetrators cut another hole in the wall of the Subway then climbed through into Paris Jewellers located in the Terra Losa Shopping Centre at 95 Avenue and 170 Street.

"A variety of tools could have been used to accomplish this," said Gerrard.

"It could simply have been some guys with some pick axe handles and some sledge hammers who just bashed their way through the walls."

Store employees say the alarm didn't go off during the robbery. They didn't know anything had happened until they showed up to work the next morning and saw the empty display cases.

Police have talked to witnesses who were in the area at the time but are now appealing to the public for more tips to help with their investigation.

"In this day and age of connectedness and communication, it is likely someone has or will come across information of value," said Gerrard.

Police said all of the jewellery is imprinted with a laser serial number, making the jewellery easier to track if it turns up in pawn shops.

Police are warning the public that if offered to buy cheap jewellery, think twice -- it could be a deal too good to be true, and to report the incident to police.
