Police save 5 people from Alberta Avenue fire

Quick-thinking police officers helped five people escape without injury when fire tore through an Alberta Avenue home Sunday evening.

The officers were on patrol when they noticed the fire in a duplex near the corner of 119th Avenue and 94th Street.

They broke a window to get inside and help everyone escape, said Edmonton fire spokesperson Shani Gwin.

Gwin said she and her colleagues are grateful for the police officers' quick actions.

"We're always thankful for our partners. Kudos to the Edmonton police," she said.

The home suffered significant damage to the upstairs level.

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 8:30 p.m., but said it was not safe for the residents to return Sunday night.

Investigators were assessing the damage late Sunday. They hope to release information about the cause and damages within the next 48 hours.
