Stolen car crashes in Point Douglas, sending 2 women to hospital

Part of the main route through Point Douglas was closed for several hours on Thursday after a stolen car crashed, sending two people to hospital.

The crash happened around 5 a.m., just after police came across the stolen vehicle near Watt Street and Chalmers Avenue in Elmwood. They tried to pull the vehicle over but the driver sped off.

Police gave chase and the pursuit ended just across the Red River, where the stolen vehicle crashed into a barrier along a bend on Higgins Avenue at McArthur Street.

Two women were taken to hospital. One has since been released and is in police custody while the second remains in hospital in stable condition.

The crash forced police to block Higgins between Sutherland Avenue and Annabella Street for more than five hours. It reopened just after 10 a.m.

There is no word on charges.

Correction : An earlier version of this story said, based on information from police, that three people were sent to hospital. In fact, police later clarified that two people were sent to hospital.(Mar 22, 2018 11:59 AM)
