This popular Columbia sandwich shop and market will open a second location. Here’s where

A popular Columbia sandwich shop and market is planning a second location across the river.

Crave Artisan Market, which has had a shop at 2843 Millwood Ave. for eight years, will open an additional location at 725 Meeting St. in West Columbia, co-owner Louis Williams confirmed to The State. That’s in the location that was formerly home to Primal Gourmet, which closed in 2022. The location is across the street and a block west from WECO Bottle and Biergarten.

“We wanted to expand,” Williams said. “We said we would love to have a couple other Craves open in the greater Columbia area. We like the idea of West Columbia, because we know that it is blossoming and is attracting more people. We’ve thought about West Columbia a lot but just hadn’t found the right location until this came along.”

Williams noted that the Millwood Avenue Crave location will remain open, and nothing will change about the business operations at the original spot.

An opening date for the West Columbia Crave has not yet been announced.

Columbia’s Free Times first reported the news of Crave’s coming West Columbia location.

Crave has been delighting customers on Millwood Avenue since 2016. It is known for its sandwiches, and readers of The State named it their favorite sandwich shop in the Midlands in a 2023 poll. A popular sandwich there has been Carlisle Korean Pulled Pork, which features house-braised pulled pork, napa cabbage slaw, sriracha lime mayo, cucumbers, sesame ginger and hoisin sauce, all on a grilled sub roll.

The production of Crave’s popular take-home goods such as chicken pot pies, lasagnas and more will be done at the new Meeting Street location, Williams said, noting it has a large commissary kitchen. The Meeting Street location also will operate as a restaurant, with seating for about 30 people. There also likely will be delivery options with various popular apps, Williams said. The co-owner added that Crave will explore a new catering menu as it settles into the second location.

“We’re very excited,” Williams said. “We’re excited to be in West Columbia and kind of help grow that area, and expand our brand.”
