Port Moody shooting victim identified

Joseph Allan Markel was shot in a home on this street Saturday morning.

Vancouver police have identified the victim of a shooting in Port Moody Saturday as Joseph Allan Markel, 32.

Markel was shot in a home the 900 block of Wallace Wynd at about 10 a.m. PT. Police say Markel was known to them.

No arrests have been made.

This is the third targeted shooting in Port Moody in recent months.

Known gang associate Gurbinder Singh Toor was shot in the parking lot of the Port Moody Recreation Complex in May.

In June, high-level gang member Randynesh Naicker was shot by a masked gunman in the parking lot outside a Starbucks.

Some Port Moody residents are concerned about the recent violence and calling on the city to take action.

A group called Port Moody Families is planning a meeting outside city at 6:30 p.m. PT Monday to ask police and politicians for more information about criminals living in the community.

But Mayor Mike Clay says there are limits on what can be released.

"Under the codes of Canada, you don't have the right to know everything about your neighbor," he said.

"But if I could release a list of every person in Port Moody with a criminal code conviction I think some of those people would be going, 'Hang on, I don't want people to know those things about me.' It could be the very people that are concerned about gangsters maybe — where do we stop? Speeding tickets?"

Clay plans to attend the meeting and says any concerned residents are more than welcome.
