Preventing dog attacks: Calgary expert offers tips for pet owners

A string of dog attacks in Calgary has Animal and Bylaw Services considering increased fines for owners of dogs involved in a biting incident.

There has also been talk of increasing licensing fees for certain breeds, like pit bulls. But a local dog behaviour specialist says reducing aggression largely comes down to the efforts of dog owners.

"All dogs can and will bite," said Barbara Walmer, the department head of behaviour at the Calgary Humane Society.

"It is part of their normal spectrum of behaviour so we need to be aware that it's not about a breed, it is about being a dog, and people being responsible for their dogs."

After a rash of dog bites earlier this month, CBC News visited Walmer at the Calgary Humane Society to find out what can be done about aggressive dog behaviour.

Walmer says avoiding incidents comes down to proper socialization and training, and owners being aware of their dog's body language.
