Prince Harry Has Been in a "Painful Place" Since Kate Middleton's Cancer Diagnosis

He reportedly regrets the things he wrote in 'Spare.'

Prince Harry wrote some things in his memoir Spare that he can't take back — and ever since Kate Middleton's cancer diagnosis, he's reportedly been in a "painful place."

Royal expert and author Dr. Tessa Dunlop told Us Weekly that Middleton's recent health battle "reframes everything" for Harry. "When you do discover that your sister-in-law has cancer and you’ve written stuff that can’t be retracted, that’s quite a painful place to be in,” Dunlop said. “I’m not saying it isn’t.”

The Elizabeth & Philip: A Story of Young Love, Marriage, and Monarchy author added that because of their very public criticism of the royal family, Harry and Markle will have to be careful with how they handle their reaction to Middleton's diagnosis.

"They deliberately criticize the monarchy [and then offer] themselves as an alternative to monarchy," she continued. "So then when the monarchy is in trouble, we do kind of make a comparison. Can Harry and Meghan really hold themselves off as the caring example now? They’re certainly going to have to be careful of their timing with any releases so that it doesn’t look opportunistic.”

“The big C — it’s kind of untouchable," she added. "When that comes creeping in the door, that just reframes everything.”

Despite learning about Middleton's illness with the rest of the world, the Sussexes released a public statement of support, as well as privately reached out to the Wales family, according to People. Harry and Markle are in the middle of planning a trip to the U.K. in May for the 10-year anniversary celebration of the Invictus Games.

Although a source initially said that Middleton and Prince William had no interest in seeing the Sussexes, an expert later added that the Wales figure there'll be even more drama if they avoid Harry and Markle. The brothers are reportedly toying with the idea of meeting up for a "short period," and Middleton and William even "suggested" the Sussexes bring their kids, Archie and Lilibet. Markle's attendance, however, has yet to be confirmed, as she is "very anxious" about returning.
