Prince Harry to Receive ESPY Award for His Work With the Invictus Games

Prince Harry will be honored at the ESPYS in early July, receiving the Pat Tillman Award for Service.

According to ESPN, which hosts the annual awards show, the Duke of Sussex is being given the Pat Tillman Award "in honor of his tireless work in making a positive impact for the veteran community through the power of sport." The award, ESPN notes, is "given to a person with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a way that echoes the legacy of the former NFL player and U.S. Army Ranger, Pat Tillman." Past recipients of the Pat Tillman Award for Service include the Buffalo Bills training staff (last year), Gretchen Evans (in 2022), and Marcus Rashford (in 2021).

Prince Harry is being recognized for founding the Invictus Games, which just celebrated its tenth anniversary this spring.

The other two special honorees at the 2024 ESPYS are Steve Gleason, a former NFL player who was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, who will receive the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, and Dawn Staley, the South Carolina Gamecocks women's basketball team head coach, who will receive the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance.

"It’s our privilege to recognize three incredible individuals - Steve Gleason, Dawn Staley and Prince Harry," Kate Jackson, the VP of Production at ESPN, said in a statement. "These honorees have used their platforms to change the world and make it more inclusive for marginalized and suffering communities, demonstrating incredible resilience, positivity and perseverance, and we’re thrilled to celebrate them at The 2024 ESPYS."

Prince Harry hasn't made a public appearance since his and Meghan Markle's trip to Nigeria in May, and will likely be in attendance at the ESPYS in Los Angeles. The 2024 ESPYS, hosted by Serena Williams, will air Thursday, July 11 at 8 p.m. eastern on ABC.
