Prince William Evades Question About Kate Middleton's Health
Prince William joined his father, King Charles, in Portsmouth today to kick off the commemorations for the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. As the royals met with veterans following the event, one asked William if Kate Middleton was "getting better."
Keeping to his policy of not commenting on his wife's health, Prince William simply replied, "She'd have loved to be here."
The Princess of Wales announced in March she was undergoing treatment for cancer; no significant updates have been shared by Kensington Palace about her health since. A few weeks ago, a senior royal aide said "she will return to work when she has had the green light from doctors," but there is no set timeline for her begin making public appearances again. Kate's last engagement was over five months ago, when she joined the royal family for church services on Christmas.
During today's event, Prince William also spoke with a former codebreaker who worked at Bletchley Park. He told her, "My wife's grandmother did the same sort of thing as you. Catherine only found out at the end of her life." (Kate's grandmother, Valerie, worked at Bletchley Park.)
In addition to these one-on-one moments, Prince William gave a speech, highlighting the bravery of those who fought in the Normandy landing.
"I am deeply honored to join you today to recognize the bravery of all of those like John Haddock who participated in the D-Day landings, the start of the liberation of France and Europe, that led to victory of the Allied Powers," the Prince of Wales said. "Our guests of honor today are those veterans from the Normandy landing, that came from across our nation and from all walks of life to join in the fight against tyranny. Many of those that took up arms had never seen combat before, some were still only in their teens."
