When the Cambridges got engaged back in 2010, we didn’t get many specifics about the actual proposal. But last night, during his speech for a reception that the couple held at Buckingham Palace, Prince William shared some sweet details that shed more light on the romantic occasion.

The Duke of Cambridge’s speech, which focused on investment ties between the UK and Africa, first touched on visiting the continent after the death of his mother, the late Princess Diana. He then revealed Africa is also personally significant because Kenya is where he proposed to then-girlfriend Kate Middleton.

"When deciding where best to propose to Catherine, I could think of no more fitting place than Kenya to get down on one knee," said the Duke.

Those last five words have been the subject of many a curious royal watcher over the past ten years, and the answer has finally come – he did bend the knee (well, in a romantic way at least).

While the location of the proposal has been known since the couple gave their first interview to journalist Tom Bradby after their engagement, this is the first confirmation that Prince William really did get down on one knee.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been very private when it comes to their love story over the years, but we have been getting more glimpses at their shared life together, with the family opening up via their Kensington Royal Instagram account.

To end his speech at the reception – where Kate wore this Needle and Thread dress – Prince William said the family hopes to visit Africa soon so they can share their love of the continent with their three children.

Perhaps for the 10-year engagement anniversary later this year?
