With International Women’s Day on March 8, it may come as a surprise that the majority of Canadians can’t name the achievements of historically famous women in this country. The survey was conducted by Ipsos on behalf of Historica Canada and under 40 per cent of respondents knew what Emily Carr and Lucy Maud Montgomery were famous for. Perhaps due to the low numbers, it seems that Canadians are aware of the gap in knowledge with only 30 per cent of the survey’s respondents said that the country is doing well at teaching youth about female accomplishment. “People are saying, ‘look, yeah, tell us more about women’s history,”‘ said Chief Executive Officer of Historica Canada, Anthony Wilson-Smith, in a telephone interview with The Canadian Press. “‘Tell us more about who are the great Canadian women? What have they done?”‘ “It’s not as though these are deliberate slights by people,” said Wilson-Smith. “It just shows that … we have a lot of heroes and just a lot of very accomplished people whose work deserves to be known. We and other places have to continue to do everything we can to put them forward.” So we wanted to test your knowledge: How well do you know famous Canadian women? Take our quiz above!
