Rajasthan Sisters Script History, Win Three PhDs on the Same Day
Three sisters from Jhunjhunu district in Rajasthan has created a unique record – by winning doctorates from the same university on the same day. This is only the second time such a unique feat has happened in India, the earlier one happening in Madhya Pradesh.
The Rajasthan-based sisters, who come from a middle-class background, have told the media that they had ample support from their parents. Reportedly, their father – Mangalchand Tilotiya - is a farmer, who also works at a shop overnight to make both ends meet. All three of his daughters studied in Jaipur for graduation and post-graduation too.

The sisters, Sarita Tilotiya (41), Kiran Tilotiya (37), and Anita Tilotiya got their doctorates in Geography, Chemistry, and Education respectively from the Jagdishprasad Jhabarmal Tibrewala University in Churela (JJTU) a few days ago. The trio has told the media that they want to work for the betterment of the nation, by contributing to the education of rural girls in whatever way they can. In fact, the sisters have stated that their father has always prioritised their education and practised ‘Beti Bachao’ long before it became a campaign slogan.
Sarita’s PhD was focused on agricultural trends, especially in marketing and procurement, while Kiran (who is a government employee) did her PhD in Chemistry on water pollution – another topic that concerns farmers. Notably, Sarita was married off at the age of 16 and since then she has worked with her husband in his food grains’ business – which led her to understanding the agriculture sector from various perspectives.
Anita, who did her doctorate in Education, has told the media that doing her PhD in a university located in a rural area – JJTU was set up in 2009 - has encouraged her to work in rural education sector. Interestingly, her doctorate includes insights on women empowerment in teaching.
