Raw chicken stored above liquor boxes? See latest Sacramento County restaurant inspections

Sacramento County health inspectors recently cited local restaurants and a gas station market for health code violations ranging from flies and expired food handler cards to improperly stored meat.

No restaurants were shut down during the latest round of inspections.

A yellow placard signals two or more major violations, according to the Sacramento County Food Inspection Guide. These are typically corrected or mitigated during the inspection.

A red placard signals “imminent danger to public health and safety” and suspends the health permit until violations are corrected. This could include, but is not limited to, major vermin contamination.

In contrast, a green placard means a restaurant passed the inspection.

The county conducts roughly 14,000 inspections a year, and 97% of all restaurants pass their inspections, spokesman Ken Casparis previously told The Sacramento Bee. About 1% of inspections result in a closure.

Health inspectors shut down Pho Saigon on April 25 due to cockroaches. The restaurant reopened on April 27.

Bambi Vegan Tacos was closed by health inspectors on April 25 due to rodent droppings. The restaurant was open on April 26

Restaurants, gas station market cited for health violations

The following Sacramento County restaurants had violations the week of May 2 through May 9, resulting in a conditional pass.

Only the dates of violations are listed. Most restaurants fully pass reinspection within 72 hours. The reports are linked. For updates on individual restaurants, you can search the EMD website here.

Licious Chinese Cuisine, 9160 E Stockton Blvd. in Elk Grove, had seven violations on Wednesday.

Boiled chicken and roast duck, chicken and pork were seen outside of proper holding temperatures during Wednesday’s inspection, according to the report.

The restaurant was missing its food handler cards and food safety certificate, and sinks were missing soap.

Raw chicken was stored above cooked food items and sauces inside a walk-in refrigerator, according to the inspection report.

Food containers were stored on the floor inside of a walk-in refrigerator.

The restaurant had not been reinspected as of Thursday afternoon.

Brissa & Co., 409 Natoma St. in Folsom, had three violations on May 3.

Soap was not available at the sink in the dough preparation station during the May 3 inspection.

Two dozen eggs and a large container of meat were stored outside of proper holding temperatures, according to the inspection report.

Bags of flour and onions were on the flour around a dry storage area, according to the report.

The restaurant was reinspected on Tuesday and received a green placard.

Cafe Dantorels Curtis Park, 2700 24th St in Sacramento, had six violations on May 3.

“An employee at the cook’s line grabbed the red-handled tongs and was about to transfer pan-sauteed red onions onto a sandwich,” the May 3 report said, but an inspector intervened.”

Some of the employees’ food handler cards were expired at the time of the inspection, and the interior panel of the ice machine had residue on its right side.

The cafe was reinspected on Monday and received a green placard.

Discount Grocery Enterprise, 3840 Madison Ave in North Highlands, had eight violations on May 1.

The sink at the gas station market was out of paper towels during the May 1 inspection.

Potato wedges, chicken samosas and chicken sandwiches were outside of proper holding temperatures.

Raw chicken was stored above liquor bottles inside of a walk-in cooler, the report said, and a “soiled reused cardboard box” was used to store food items beneath a prep table.

The store was reinspected on May 2 but again received a yellow placard for chicken and potato wedges being outside of proper holding temperatures.

Inspectors observed two flies in the front area during the inspection, according to the report.

The store was reinspected on May 3 and received a green placard.
