RCMP find body of teen counsellor who disappeared during swim at Bible camp

RCMP divers have found the body of a 17-year-old camp counsellor who went missing near a Bible camp north of Swan River earlier this week.

He was found on Thursday off the shore of Lake Winnipegosis, where he had last been seen swimming with dozens of campers on Tuesday afternoon.

The teen, who was from Split Lake, Man., was working as a cabin leader at the Steeprock Bay Bible Camp near Sapotaweyak Cree Nation, Man., about 400 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

RCMP said earlier this week that he had been swimming out to a floating dock during a public swim time for campers, but he disappeared. Witnesses did not see him resurface and police were called at about 7:10 p.m.

A boat from Manitoba Sustainable Development was used to search for the boy in the evening, but it was called off due to nightfall.

The boy's family was at the camp this week while divers searched the waters.

There were more than 60 kids at the camp at the time. Social workers and counsellors were brought in to the camp.
