The Northwest Territories' chief coroner and the RCMP have opened an investigation into the death of a 24-year-old man in Yellowknife earlier this week.

According to police, the young man was brought to the hospital on Wednesday night in medical distress, and later died there.

Police later learned the man "may have been assaulted" at the Raven Pub in Yellowknife on May 11, the RCMP said in a Sunday news release.

"RCMP and the coroner service are now investigating whether or not this assault contributed to the man's death," the release said.

Police have asked anyone who was at the Raven Pub on May 11 between 1 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. and may have seen an altercation to contact them.
