RCMP recover body of American hiker swept up in river on Canol Trail
RCMP have found the body of a hiker who went missing on the Canol Trail after he was swept up in a river current.
In a news release, RCMP say officers in Norman Wells, N.W.T., were advised by a traveller returning from the trail that two hikers had requested help.
The two men had been hiking with a third man, who had been swept up in the current on the Little Keele River on Aug. 20, and had not been seen since.
A helicopter carrying an RCMP member located the two hikers and they were transported back to Norman Wells. Meanwhile, an aerial search began for the missing man.
The man's body was located on Aug. 25, but it took three days to recover it.
"Due to the remote location, a specialized team was required to recover the remains," according to the news release.
All of the men were from the United States. The RCMP is not releasing any of their names.
The RCMP and the N.W.T. chief coroner are investigating, but the news release said there is no evidence of foul play.
The RCMP thanked the Sahtu Helicopters and Aerial Rescue Solutions for their assistance in the search.
