Ready for some winter whiplash, Kansas City? Piercing cold to follow near 50-degree high

For those in Kansas City who can’t stand the cold of winter, don’t look at any forecast beyond Saturday.

A bit of a winter weather whiplash is on the way that will see temperatures tumble from near 50 degrees both Friday and Saturday to the teens and 20s on Sunday. Wind chills are expected to dip into the single digits, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.

Temperatures will remain at or below freezing on Thursday. Breezy conditions will make it feel colder with wind chills expected to be 20s in the afternoon, the weather service said.

The brief warm up starts Friday, when temperatures are expected to rise into the upper 40s during the afternoon. The warm weather continues Saturday, with temperatures climbing to just a couple degrees below 50.

The cold snap arrives early Sunday, with temperatures tumbling into the upper teens. Wind chills are expected to fall to near zero degrees Sunday morning, according to the weather service.

By the afternoon, there will be a slight warm up, with temperatures climbing to the mid-20s, but wind chills are expected to be in the low to mid-teens.

That should make for a bitterly cold AFC Championship game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium.

At the 5:30 p.m. kickoff, temperatures are expected to be in the mid-20s with a wind chill of in the lower to mid-teens. Temperatures are expected to gradually drop during the game, falling to about 21 degrees by 9 p.m. Wind chills are expected to dip into the single digits as well, according to the weather service.

The cold weather is expected to linger into much of next week, the weather service said.
