Students open lemonade stand to raise money for school supplies

It looks like any other lemonade stand but the small business operation set up by some Regina elementary school students is making a big difference.

"We wanted to raise some money, and people started giving us a more than we thought. So now we want to help other kids," said Clara Mantee, 11.

Mantee along with Savannah Severight, 12, and Dominique Wahpooseyan, 9, began the lemonade stand over the weekend to raise money for school supplies.

The stand was set up on the corner of Pasqua Street and Fourth Avenue in Regina beginning on Sunday. Once the word got out on social media, the business took off.

The girls raised more than $200 in a day, enough to buy their own school notebooks and art supplies. Now, they're keeping the lemonade stand going to raise money for others.

"We want to help other kids. We got what we want, so now it's other kids' turn," said Severight.

Amber Agarand saw the girls' story posted on Facebook. She was an eager customer.

"My boys got help with their school supplies this year. So we thought it would be nice to pay it forward, "said Agarand. "It's just a good thing to do for somebody after we've been helped too."

In between selling lemonade, the girls were excited to show off their new school supplies. Inside their new knapsacks, they unveiled a stack of fresh notebooks and colouring pencils. They proudly wore donated T-shirts with the slogan "We have the power to change the world".

"We do have the power to change the world," said Mantee.

They're proving it one 50-cent glass of lemonade at a time.
