What’s replacing Goat Bar & Grill in downtown Modesto? 10th Street restaurant opens soon

What was most recently the Goat Bar & Grill in downtown Modesto has reopened with a new name and a new owner, but a similar concept.

Carlos Carmona, owner of Slides Restaurant & Lounge in Manteca, expanded his business and opened a second location at the corner of 10th and J streets.

The layout of the building remains the same, Carmona said. Only cosmetic upgrades were done.

The concept of the business is indicated by its name. Slides serves American food — namely sliders — during weekly dinner hours and is a lounge on Friday and Saturday nights. It also serves breakfast on the weekends.

Carmona is no rookie when it comes to owning businesses in the food and beverage industry. He ran restaurants and nightclubs in San Jose for a decade before moving to the Central Valley.

After the move, he opened Pop’s Breakfast House in Stockton. Like a number of small businesses, though, Pop’s did not survive the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carmona also owned a Stockton nightclub that was next to a bar owned by none other than Goat Bar & Grill co-owner Les Knoll.

“We became friends,” Carmona said. “He actually came to breakfast (at Slides) in Manteca. He loved the concept and he’s like, ‘This would be amazing at The Goat.’”

Thus, the sale commenced.

What’s on the menu at Slides Restaurant

Slides has 16 sliders to choose from, as well as menudo, pastas, salads and more.

The Rocky Balboa is one of the slider options; it has a garnish of a cheese stick with marinara sauce. Others are a banh mi sandwich slider and a fried chicken slider with macaroni and cheese on top.

“What people love about it is that you can go there and you can get different things,” Carmona said.

What the restaurant really is known for is its breakfast, he said. It’s served on a tower and feeds two to three people. The tower includes pancakes, waffles, French toast, chorizo and eggs, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon and hash browns.

Carmona uses home recipes, a lot of which came from his mother.

“I take a lot of pride in my food and to make sure everything comes out fresh and cooked right,” he said.

Dinner hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 4:30 to 9 p.m. Breakfast hours are Saturday and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

How does the lounge work?

The lounge is open on Friday and Saturday nights after dinner service until 1:30 a.m.

“At 9 p.m., the lights come down and the music goes up,” Carmona said. “ The DJ starts at 9. We convert the lounge kind of into a nightlife lounge.”

There is a full bar at Slides and a craft cocktail menu.

Only those 21 and older are allowed during lounge hours, and there is a dress code. Items like white or black T-shirts, hats, sports attire and baggy clothes do not adhere to the code.

“I’m shooting for people to come dressed up and have a great evening,” Carmona said.

Slides’ grand opening was Saturday at 1001 10th St. in Modesto.
