Rescue efforts underway as floods hit southern China

STORY: Rescue and emergency workers were seen tending to stranded residents on rescue boats in residential areas as well as commercial streets, in video aired by CCTV. The broadcaster also reported emergency supplies including food, water and other amenities were being provided.

As of now, 41 emergency boats are in operation in the city areas that accommodate around 38,000 people, who are said to be stranded.

The southern Chinese province has been battered by unusually heavy, sustained and widespread rainfall since Thursday (April 18), with powerful storms ushering in an earlier-than-normal start to the region's annual flooding season.
