Rescue Efforts Underway to Save 13 Russian Miners Trapped Underground

Drilling efforts are underway as authorities race to rescue 13 miners who have been trapped underground since March 18, in Russia’s far eastern Amur region.

“Experts at the Pioneer mine in the Amur region are drilling as quickly as possible…but the hard rock could cause the pipe to deflect. A few millimeters can become critical,” wrote Zvezda News, a channel linked to the Russian Defense Ministry.

The footage Zvezda shared to Telegram shows heavy machinery and red tape at the site of the collapsed mine in Pioneer, described as “one of the largest Gold mining enterprises in Russia.”

Authorities warned that the whole mine was at risk of collapse and flooding, after rescue efforts encountered water during rescue efforts, state news agency TASS reported on March 25, citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations. Credit: Zvezda News via Storyful
