Rexdale's Steak Queen restaurant, a Rob Ford favourite, catches fire
A fire broke out at the Steak Queen early Tuesday morning, a popular Rexdale restaurant made infamous after the late Toronto mayor Rob Ford was caught on tape there swearing and speaking in Jamaican patois.
Firefighters were called to the restaurant at 1:22 a.m. where flames were visible from the roof on the east side of the restaurant.
Crews used saws to open up the roof and knock down the flames.
The call was for a one-alarm commercial fire, which required 11 trucks, 44 firefighters and three district chiefs.
No one was inside the restaurant when the fire broke out and the fire marshal's office has yet to determine the cost of damage. They are still investigating the cause of the blaze.
The restaurant, on Rexdale Boulevard, west of Martin Grove Road is known for being the site where the late Rob Ford admitted to drinking alcohol after a YouTube video appeared showing him at the restaurant swearing, mumbling and speaking in Jamaican patois.
Rexdale Boulevard remains closed in both directions west of Martin Grove Road.
