Road House remake gets fresh Rotten Tomatoes scorePrime Video

Prime Video's new Road House remake has landed a fresh Rotten Tomatoes rating after its first reviews.

The film is based on the 1989 movie of the same name, which starred Patrick Swayze as a professional bouncer who is sent to work at a roadside bar in Missouri.

In a modern twist, the remake sees Jake Gyllenhaal play an ex-UFC fighter who ends up working at a bar in a Florida, only to find that "this paradise is not all it seems".

At the time of writing, Road House has an impressive score of 76% on Rotten Tomatoes from 25 reviews.

The rating will likely change after the movie arrives on Prime Video on March 21, but it's certainly a promising start.

Here's what some of the critics have been saying so far:

Variety

"It’s a movie, like the first film, that’s been assembled out of standard components. Yet that’s part of its scuzzy pleasure — that it has no pretence about itself, except for the intensity with which [director Doug Liman] stages it, turning the fight scenes into rollicking spontaneous smashfests."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Even though Road House will likely be measured by the intensity of its fights, it manages to shape a surprisingly grounded portrait of the Keys, and perhaps the South more broadly, through its music.

"The fictional Road House stage becomes a lively showcase for real artists, from the 'swamp-pop' of C.C Adcock and Tommy McLain to the funky electronic sounds of Anjelika 'Jelly' Joseph. Their tunes, coupled with the company Dalton attracts, make nearly every moment of Road House an event."

IndieWire

"Road House is a fitting update to its predecessor’s legacy. Not because it’s better, or even because it’s all that similar, but because it moves with the same unselfconscious stupidity that fuelled so many of the '80s blockbusters we remember so fondly.

"Glass Key isn’t Missouri, and Gyllenhaal isn’t Patrick Swayze, but anyone who streams it can enjoy the memories of a simpler time when we went out to watch these kinds of movies in theatres."

Empire

"Everyone involved, from great supporting actors like Lukas Gage to the bands who perform at the road house bar while mayhem erupts all around them, bring their A-game to a remake that constantly does its best to surprise and delight.

"Expertly handled by director Doug Liman, wittily scripted, and boasting a wonderfully original take on the action hero archetype, this new Road House is a total riot."

Road House will be released on Prime Video on March 21.
