Robin Drodge, hockey fan who got to meet Sidney Crosby, dies

Robin Drodge, the man who fulfilled his dream of meeting hockey star Sidney Crosby earlier this month, has died.

The 31-year-old from Newfoundland was flown to Halifax to be treated for serious liver and kidney problems.

While in Halifax, he and his family got the chance to meet Crosby during a Stanley Cup tour stop in Cole Harbour.

Dianne Drodge-Lockyer, Robin's mother, shared a Facebook post Wednesday morning about her son's death.

"Although our hearts are completely shattered, he had his peace made, and left this world without a fight," she wrote.

"You will never suffer again, and you have left lasting imprints on all the lives you touched."

Drodge's trip to a hospital in Halifax overlapped with Crosby's Stanley Cup trip, and the two had a chance to meet.

Drodge, who was blind, said Crosby took his hand and guided it over the Conn Smythe trophy, describing it in detail to him.

"There was a maple leaf — he said that came from Maple Leaf Gardens — he [took] my hand all the way up to the top," he said at the time.

Drodge was flown back to hospital in St. John's earlier this week.
