Roundup: Central Catholic softball wins in tournament walk-off, Ripon moves to 3-0

Tournaments are up and running for Stanislaus District baseball and softball teams to start the spring season.

High school softball players are taking over Rainbow Fields for a tournament that features some of the area’s best junior varsity and varsity programs, including Central Catholic, Big Valley Christian, Enochs, Beyer and others. The tournament continues through Saturday.

Baseball teams also get their season underway in nonleague games and tournaments across the area.

Here is a look at Tuesday’s slate of games, scores and stats:

Softball

Enochs 2, Big Valley Christian 2: Cal Poly-bound Natalie Camarena struck out 11 batters as the Eagles and Lions finished the opening game of the Rainbow High School Classic in a tie. Each team scored once in the first and the Lions took a one-run lead in the fourth. Enochs answered in the top of the fifth with a run. The game was called due to time after six innings.

Central Catholic 5, Enochs 4: Central Catholic won its first contest in the Rainbow High School Classic in dramatic fashion. Enochs took a 4-0 first-inning lead but the Raiders slowly chipped away, scoring three runs in the third and a run in the fourth and fifth innings each. The Raiders ended the game in walk-off fashion as Emori Machado lined a pitch to the outfield. She was credited with a double but came around to score the game-winning run on an error.

Central Catholic 14, Beyer 1: The Raiders jumped on the Patriots early, scoring in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings in their second game of the evening. Samantha Nichols had a pair of doubles and four RBI, Jazmarie Roberts finished with a pair of triples and Cal signee Miranda Temple and Taryn Calderon each added a triple. Roberts and Calderon had a pair of RBI.

Lodi 13, Beyer 0: Mackenzie Hough and Alanna Verges each recorded a hit for the Patriots and Hannah Wemyss added a walk, but Beyer was unable to score a run against the Flames.

East Union 11, Central Valley 1: The Hawks scored their only run of the game in the top of the fourth inning when Alicia Espinoza drove in Gabriela Delatorre. The Hawks gave up six runs in the second inning, which led to the loss.

Escalon 5, Buhach Colony 4: Escalon scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to seal a one-run win over Buhach Colony at the Rainbow High School Classic. After leading 2-1 heading into the top of the fifth, the Cougars allowed three runs in the half inning, falling behind 4-2. Jayci Trimble singled, scoring Arianna Velasco for the winning run.

Turlock 13, Buhach Colony 3: Cadence Campbell drove in a game-high four runs for Turlock in its win over the Thunder. Turlock scored five runs in the first and third innings en route to a 10-run victory. Six other Bulldogs drove in a run in the game.

Escalon 16, Turlock 10: Though they played just three innings, there was no shortage of scoring between the Cougars and Bulldogs. Turlock scored 10 runs in the top of the first but Escalon answered with four runs in the first and six in the second and third innings each to seal the victory. Nearly every Cougar drove in a run, led by Shelby Wilder’s three RBI. Elizabeth Allan, Violet Kent and Arianna Velasco each drove in a pair of runs. For Turlock, Abby Maxwell, Karley Wool and Rylee Murphy each drove in a pair of runs.

Central Valley 8, Big Valley Christian 7: Cecily Fontana’s three-run home run powered a furious Big Valley Christian sixth-inning comeback attempt in the Rainbow High School Classic. With the Lions trailing 8-1, the homer sparked a six-run inning in which Ella Alavezos had an RBI double and Breese Johnson drove in a pair on a double of her own. Jannet Valencia had three RBI for Central Valley, Brooklyn Steeley drove in a pair of runs and Alicia Espinoza and Valeria Padilla added an RBI each. Steeley hit her first career home run in the first inning.

Hughson 3, Atwater 2: Freshman Kylie Tangney was big for the Huskies, pitching the complete game and striking out 10 batters. Grace Leedom and Kylie Tangney each drove in a run for Hughson.

Gregori 9, Ceres 4: Concordia University, Irvine commit Kailey Estes recorded 12 strikeouts while NeVaeh Scheper and Angelina Hoffman carried the offensive load, driving in three runs apiece. Three other Jaguars finished with one RBI as Gregori moved to 4-2 on the season.

Modesto 15, Johansen 3: An eight-run opening inning and a six-run third powered the Panthers to their second win this season. Ariana Arellano had four RBI and a two-run home run in the first inning, and Nichole Aguirre, Alibi Perez and Alyssa Ramirez each drove in a pair of runs. In the circle, Angelica Arellano struck out nine batters.

Orestimba 5, Patterson 3: Aleksa Oliveros finished with a game-high two RBI and Hannah Taft, Belany Martens and Mariah Avila each drove in a run. Orestimba won its fifth game early in the season.

Ripon 8, Sonora 0: San Francisco State signee Kharime Caratachea struck out 12 batters to lead Ripon to its third win in as many games this season. Jaycee Wilmshurst, Addison Narajno, Alana Hernandez and Izabelle Superzem each drove in a run.

Pitman 6, Hilmar 2: UC Davis signee Rylee Reeves had a triple, Stan State signee Madison Rosebrough finished with a pair of hits and an RBI and Menlo College signee Ella Underwood recorded a pair of hits and an RBI as the Pride earned their first win in the season opener.

Chavez 14, Ripon Christian 3: A seven-run second inning broke the game open for Chavez and the Knights could not recover. Ripon Christian scored once in the bottom of the second and twice in the bottom of the fourth.

East Union 4, Lodi 1

Baseball

Ceres 5, Escalon 1: Diego Mariscal had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for the Bulldogs, who earned their second win this season. After Escalon scored in the bottom of the first, Ceres answered with three runs in the fourth and added a pair in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

Delhi 4, Riverbank 2: The Bruins fell to 1-3 on the season with Tuesday’s loss and Delhi moves to a perfect 3-0. Riverbank hosts Summerville later this week.

Central Valley 17, Modesto 3: Sophomore Fernando Dominguez recorded a home run, a double, four hits and five RBI while Mason Whitworth went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Six other Hawks drove in at least one run.

Davis 15, Big Valley Christian 4: The Spartans put up runs in five of the six innings the two teams played Tuesday. A seven-run second inning helped Davis pull away in the nonleague contest. Cohen Paddock and Jackson Howell each recorded a pair of RBI.
