Roundup: Oakdale, Gregori girls soccer clinch league titles

The final week of the winter sports regular season is here, which means teams fight and claw to secure league championships and Sac-Joaquin Section playoff positions.

Monday night, many Modesto-area soccer and basketball teams were in action.

In girls soccer, Oakdale secured the Valley Oak League title with a win over Manteca, and Gregori won the Central California Athletic League title over Pitman.

In boys basketball, the CCAL continues to be interesting. Pitman has won the league but Downey and Gregori are looking to secure the final playoff spot. Beyer remains steady in the Western Athletic Conference thanks to another outstanding performance from lead guard Prince Major.

In boys soccer, Gregori finished league perfect and Enochs came in second in the CCAL.

In girls basketball, just two teams were in action Monday as Gregori and Patterson look to hold onto their playoff spots.

Basketball teams play through Friday, with playoff brackets being released Saturday during the section’s selection show on the NFHS Network at 1:30 p.m. Boys and girls soccer regular seasons end Tuesday and brackets will be released Wednesday.

Boys basketball

Oakland 79, Modesto Christian 69: The Crusaders fell into an early hole they couldn’t climb out of against the Oakland Section’s No. 2 team. Modesto Christian finished the Tri-City Athletic League season undefeated and play two more nonleague games before playoffs.

Beyer 68, Johansen 60: Beyer picked up its ninth Western Athletic Conference win this season as it continues to maintain the league’s third-place spot. Prince Major put together another great performance, tallying 33 points just one game after dropping a career-high 38.

Ceres 60, Davis 57: Davis continues to play well, this time taking the WAC’s No. 2 team to the wire. Ceres went ahead 21-11 after the first, but a 15-7 third quarter for the Spartans helped them climb back into the game. Davis outscored Ceres in the second half, 34-25. With the victory, Ceres earns its second 10-win WAC record in three seasons.

Turlock 57, Downey 39: Turlock led by just 10 at halftime but was able to pull away from Downey in the second half in the battle of two 5-3 Central California Athletic League teams. With the win, Turlock takes over sole possession of the league’s No. 2 spot. Downey needs to win Wednesday against Enochs to clinch a playoff spot.

Pitman 71, Enochs 54: Pitman, the CCAL champion, won its eighth league contest Monday night, completing the season sweep against Enochs. The Pride finish the season against Gregori, which is looking to earn a playoff berth.

Gregori 71, Modesto 59: Gregori’s late playoff push continued Monday with a win over Modesto. Jayson Powers notched a 13-point, 12-rebound double double and added four blocks, Kaleb Smith finished with 20 points and seven steals and Raphael Rosas added 17 points. The Jaguars look to upset Pitman on Wednesday to punch their playoff ticket.

Girls basketball

Patterson 56, Merced 49: Patterson earned the season sweep over Merced with a narrow victory. The Tigers continue a packed final week of the regular season with games Feb. 6 and Feb. 8 as they look to keep the Central California Conference’s No. 2 seed. Patterson’s 24 wins so far this season marks the third straight 20-win season and are the most in program history since 2014-15.

Gregori 60, Enochs 32: Gregori continues to hold onto its playoff hopes after beating Enochs Monday. The win snaps a three-game losing streak which included dropping a pair of CCAL contests. The Jaguars are tied with Turlock and Pitman with 6-2 records and finish the regular season with contests against Modesto and the Pride.

Boys soccer

Davis 3, Ceres 2: Miguel Garcia, Alberto Ramirez and Jacob Lara Alvarez each scored a goal in the Spartans win over Ceres. Davis is the WAC’s No. 4 team with a 7-5-2 record. Enrique Murillo and Luis Flores scored for Ceres.

Beyer 1, Johansen 0: The Patriots earned their third WAC win in their final contest, ending a three-match winless streak. Beyer ends the season 5-15-1 overall and 3-10-1 in league play.

Denair 1, Ripon Christian 0: Denair scored the only goal in the second half to continue its Southern League dominance. David Koolhaas recorded seven saves for Ripon Christian.

Orestimba 10, Le Grand 1: Orestimba scored 10 or more goals for the second straight game Monday. Seven players scored, led by three Warriors with two goals apiece. Joel Corona and Julian Lopez manned the goal for Orestimba.

Enochs 1, Downey 0: Carlos Fernandez scored the only goal, assisted by Christian Khanishian in the first half for the Eagles, helping them maintain second place in the CCAL. Enochs ends the season with a pair of shutouts.

Gregori 3, Pitman 0: Michael Daley, Fernando Malagon and Adrian Yepez-Yepez each scored goals to help Gregori put the finishing touches on a CCAL championship. The Jaguars finished 10-0.

Girls soccer

Gregori 2, Pitman 0: Gregori finished CCAL play undefeated, recording a 7-0-2 record. Pitman’s only two league losses were at the hands of the Jaguars. Monday, Gregori captured its first league championship since winning the Modesto Metro Conference in 2015-16.

Oakdale 3, Manteca 1: In just her third Valley Oak League contest, Kyndra Obermeyer scored two goals and added one assist to lead Oakdale past Manteca. Dakota Burford scored the Mustangs’ other goal. Though they both have 6-2-2 league records, Oakdale earned the nod as the league’s top team because it swept Manteca this season. It is the first back-to-back league championships in program history.

Ripon Christian 4, Denair 1: Freshman Brooke Barnes scored two goals and Alanna Blanco and Dayna Koolhaas each added one as Ripon Christian earned its 11th Southern League win.

Ceres 4, Davis 2: Ceres trailed at halftime, 2-1, but rallied in the final 40 minutes, scoring three goals to beat Davis by a pair of scores. It was a must-win game for the Bulldogs, which are in third place in the WAC standings.

Johansen 2, Beyer 1: Johansen earned its fourth WAC win, beating Beyer for the second time this season. The Vikings finish the regular season 7-6-5 and 4-3-5 in league play.

Sierra 7, Central Catholic 1: Four players scored for Sierra led by Hailey Cruz, who finished with four goals. The Raiders’ goal came in the second half.
