Sabrina Carpenter and Jake Gyllenhaal Had a Cute, Supportive Moment at the End of 'Saturday Night Live'

On Saturday, May 18, Jake Gyllenhaal hosted Saturday Night Live for the third time while Sabrina Carpenter made her debut as the musical guest for the evening. She performed her big hit “Espresso,” then a medley of her tracks “Feather” and “Nonsense.”

At the end of the episode, the pair lined up for the traditional sign off to the audience and even shared a hug to close out the night. Fans were intrigued by the moment, as Carpenter is a good friend of singer Taylor Swift. Gyllenhaal and Swift dated briefly over a decade ago and some of her biggest hits are rumored to be about their relationship, including hints to how and why it ended.

Viewers invested in the history between the three seemed to take it as a sign that they were all at peace with one another now.

Swift is currently touring through Europe for her Eras Tour and is dating NFL star Travis Kelce, so she has clearly moved on. Carpenter is in a relationship with Irish actor Barry Keoghan. She and Gyllenhaal also starred in a sketch together based on the cartoon Scooby Doo, during which Carpenter played Daphne and Gyllenhaal embodied Fred. Mikey Day and Sarah Sherman stepped in as Shaggy and Velma, respectively, and there was a CGI Scooby.

The skit spoofed the group’s habit of tying up villains and then removing their masks to reveal their true identity—only things take a gory turn when they go deeper and actually rip someone’s face off. The bloody aftermath ends with Fred being shot by Scooby the dog and it turns out to all be an advertisement for Apple Face ID, with the slogan, “Never Get Ripped Off Again.”

The episode was the 49th season finale, and Gyllenhaal joked in a song about how he wasn’t the first choice to host.

“I was actually the first choice to host the finale after a lot of people said no,” Gyllenhaal sang. “I guess they’re all holding out for the 50th, but not me. Not little JG. I’m the one who said, ‘yeah.’”

He continued, “They asked Pedro Pascal but he wasn’t around. Zendaya said no ’cause she’d be out of town. Even asked [Ryan] Gosling to come back, just hosted three shows ago.”
