Sacramento to host open house on plan to add a dog park to one of these iconic neighborhoods

The city of Sacramento is exploring the possibility of adding a dog park around the Curtis Park, Land Park and South Land Park neighborhoods, and is looking for input from area residents.

One of the locations being considered is Sierra 2 Center, located on the corner of Castro Way and 25th Street, which has long been loved by residents as a place to let their dogs play off-leash. The sports fields have been utilized as a de facto dog park for the dozens of dogs that call Curtis Park home.

Sierra 2 Center is just one of five sites the city is considering for a future park, according to city spokeswoman Gabby Miller, who added that the city is “exploring what a dog park would look like at many locations, not just Sierra 2.”

Other locations include William B. Land Park; Ray Eames Park at Donner Way near Crocker Drive; Curtis Park; and Belle Coolidge Park on South Land Park Drive at Seamus Avenue.

“The concept plan for the potential dog park at Sierra 2 does outline spaces for large and small dogs,” Miller said. “This is not a final design and could change based on many factors including community feedback. A decision has not yet been made on the addition of a permanent dog park at Sierra 2.”

The city is asking residents to attend an open house event about the changes from 4 to 7 p.m at Sierra 2’s Curtis Hall, 2791 24th St. Eight concept plans will be available to view at the open house.

“Community members can drop in at any time during the open house to provide feedback on initial concept plans and locations of the potential dog park,” the city said in a news release.

“This feedback will be one of several factors considered in developing a future scope of work,” the city said.
