Saint John fire destroys 1 building, damages 3 others

Saint John apartment fire forces 12 people to flee

One building was destroyed and three others were damaged in another overnight fire in Saint John on Tuesday.

The fire, at a vacant building in the area of 587 Lancaster Ave., was reported at about 12:45 a.m.

Fire officials say the three-storey building collapsed and the fire quickly spread to the neighbouring properties.

One of the adjacent buildings suffered considerable damage, while the other two buildings had minor damage.

About 20 people had to leave their buildings while the firefighters battled the fire.

The Canadian Red Cross is providing emergency aid to 12 residents.

The Salvation Army Emergency Response Unit was also on scene.

No one was injured in the fire.

There was another fire on Monday on the city's lower west side. That fire destroyed a three-unit apartment building.

In that case, one person died, and five others were left looking for a new place to live.
