Sanikiluaq man facing murder charge makes brief court appearance

A Sanikiluaq man facing a first-degree murder charge in the death of his wife appeared virtually in court in Iqaluit Tuesday morning.

Danny Paul Eyaituk, 38, was arrested April 19 after Annie Tracy Oqaituq, 36, was found dead in their home, according to the RCMP.

Eyaituk appeared before Justice Susan Cooper on a video screen. He was in a room at the Aaqqigiarvik Correctional Healing Facility in Iqaluit, wearing the same blue crewneck sweater inmates at the facility usually wear.

Iqaluit defence lawyer John Yannakis appeared in the courtroom on Eyaituk’s behalf and requested the case be adjourned for the disclosure of documents.

Speaking through an interpreter, Eyaituk said he hasn’t spoken to a lawyer yet and that he doesn’t speak English very well.

Cooper explained to Eyaituk that he will be visited by a lawyer with an interpreter.

Eyaituk said “yes” when asked by Cooper if he understands what’s happening next in his case.

“Thank you, ma’am,” he said before exiting the video screen.

Eyaituk’s next court date is May 7 in Iqaluit.
