Buffy the Vampire Slayer's Sarah Michelle Gellar has landed her next major TV role, in the prequel show Dexter: Original Sin.

The actor, who is also known for the Scooby-Doo movies, Ringer, and Do Revenge, has joined the Dexter spin-off as the titular character's boss at the Miami Metro Police Department, Tanya Martin (as reported by Variety).

The prequel series follows a young Dexter, played by Shadow and Bone actor Patrick Gibson, as his bloodthirsty urges start to come through as he goes from a student to experiencing the wider world. His dad Harry, played by Christian Slater, helps him live by the Code, in which he only kills people who the world would be better off without.

Trying to do that without alerting the authorities is easier said than done, especially when he himself starts working for the police's forensic department.

Other cast members for Original Sin include Grey's Anatomy star Patrick Dempsey, and singer Christina Milian.

Nina Diaz, president of content and chief creative officer at Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios & Paramount Media Networks is quoted in a statement as saying: "Sarah Michelle Gellar is a pop culture icon who perfectly rounds out our best-in-class cast featuring Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey among others.

"We're thrilled to have her return to the Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios family and join the origin story of the Dexter franchise."

Earlier this year, it was announced that Gellar's Paramount+ series Wolf Pack had been cancelled due to the studio deciding that it didn't want to fund something that would have a two-year gap between seasons.

Dexter: Original Sin does not currently have a release window.
