Sask. woman sentenced for running over, killing boyfriend

A woman on a Saskatchewan First Nation will spend 42 months in prison after running over and killing her common-law partner with her car while she was drunk in April 2013.

On Friday, Sept. 23, Valerie Standing pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death and driving while 0.08 causing death in a Prince Albert courtroom.

Standing is from the Wahpeton Dakota Nation, about 142 kilometres north of Saskatoon.

The 26-year-old originally faced a charge of second-degree murder on top of the other two charges after running over her common-law partner Brant Fox, 28, on the Wahpeton Dakota Nation while she was drunk.

Fox was pronounced dead at the scene.

A family member told CBC News the pair was in a relationship and had a child together.

Prosecutor Jeff Luvyk said back in June that the Crown would stay the murder charge, adding they would be satisfied with with guilty pleas for impaired driving causing death and driving while 0.08 causing death.

After pleading guilty to those two charges, a judge dropped the driving while 0.08 causing death charge and sentenced Standing to 42 months in prison.
