Saskatchewan elm pruning ban ends Aug. 31

Saskatchewan's annual ban on pruning elm trees comes to an end on Monday.

Pruning elm trees is prohibited from April 1 to August 31 each year to reduce the risk of Dutch elm disease.

The concern is that the elm bark beetles that spread the disease and are active during that period are attracted to fresh elm cuts.

Pruning can begin again on Sept. 1.

People who want more information about Dutch elm disease, or who suspect an elm tree may be infected, can call the Ministry of Environment's general inquiry line at 1-800-567-4224.
