Two police officers shot and killed a 27-year-old man in Saskatoon last week, and the incident is now under investigation.

The investigation is being done by the serious incident response team (SIRT), who issued a news release about the shooting Monday. The civilian-led independent organization is responsible for looking into serious incidents involving police officers in Saskatchewan such as death, injury or sexual assault.

Police were called to the Pleasant Hill neighborhood on Avenue S South Thursday, after reports of an armed man in the area firing a shotgun with a group of people, the release said.

SIRT said in the release that officers found a group similar to the one described in the call, and a confrontation began between a man and two police officers. The officers shot the man with their service pistols, the release said.

Emergency medical services were called but the man was pronounced dead shortly after.

The release doesn't specify if the man who was shot was armed, or if this was believed to be the same individual reported to have fired a shotgun earlier. Pieces of a gun were later found in the area, according to the release.

SIRT said in the release that they are continuing to look into the situation. The public will be informed of the results of the search within 90 days after the investigation.
